GitLab is seeking a People Systems Engineer to design, build, and maintain automations, integrations, and AI-powered workflows that connect Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and other tools powering GitLab's global workforce. Reporting to the Senior Director of People Technology and working alongside the Lead People Systems Engineer, you will own features from design through tested code, deployment, and ongoing reliability across Workato, Google Cloud, and Claude. Key Responsibilities: - Build, test, and maintain People system automations and integrations across Workato, Google Cloud Platform, Claude, Workday, Greenhouse, and GitLab, owning features from design through deployment. - Develop integrations between Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools using Workday Web Services (WWS), Slack API, and Bot SDK. Build Slack apps and bots that automate manual workflows for team members globally. - Write clean, readable automation code in Ruby or comparable scripting languages, stored and versioned in GitLab with clear documentation and peer code reviews. - Monitor integration health, troubleshoot failures quickly, and fix root causes to maintain reliability at scale in a high-growth environment. - Ship changes safely through GitLab CI/CD pipelines, following testing, change-management, and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) IT general controls (ITGC) standards. - Leverage AI tools, large language models (LLMs), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks, including Claude, daily to accelerate development, prototype AI agents, and reimagine how People work gets done. - Partner with People Technology Analysts on configuration, testing, and releases, and with Information Security, IT, and AI Engineering on security and standards. - Raise the bar for automation architecture, documentation, and maintenance, learning from and contributing alongside the Lead People Systems Engineer. The People Technology team builds the systems foundation enabling GitLab to scale as a global, all-remote company. You'll work across core systems, integrations, reporting, and compliance, partnering with stakeholders across time zones to move fast and create seamless experiences. Requirements: - Hands-on experience building automations or integrations, ideally with human resources or business systems. - Experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or comparable scripting languages (Python, JavaScript); willingness to learn Ruby if needed. - Hands-on experience with Workato or comparable integration platform as a service (iPaaS) in a production environment. - Experience working with APIs and web services, including REST and SOAP, with understanding of how data moves between systems. - Proficiency with Git for version control and code review; treat automation code like production software. - AI-forward mindset: use AI tools daily to automate tasks, speed up development, and improve processes; energized by AI possibilities. - Ability to work independently, solve problems with curiosity, come with options and recommendations, and collaborate openly. Protect confidential information and take ownership of code quality, reliable outcomes, and end-user experience. - Additional relevant experience includes: Workday integrations (WWS, Reporting as a Service, Workday Studio), Slack apps or bots, CI/CD pipelines, Google Cloud Platform or AWS, Docker or Kubernetes, building with LLMs, AI agents or MCP frameworks, SOX ITGC controls, Greenhouse, Serval, Google Workspace, or all-remote and asynchronous work. A related computing degree or equivalent experience is welcome but not required.
