Base Power is rebuilding America's electrical grid by deploying distributed battery networks to transform the centralized grid into a resilient, abundant system. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to own the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for residential and commercial battery energy storage systems.
In this role, you will:
- Own mechanical design, development, and optimization of components and assemblies for residential battery systems from concept through production, ensuring reliability, high performance, and manufacturability.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and prototypes using CATIA 3DX, producing manufacturing drawings with proper GD&T and tolerance stacks.
- Perform thermal, stress, and structural analysis using hand calculations and simulation to validate performance, safety, and reliability.
- Select materials based on performance, cost, and manufacturability; collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers to maintain quality and production standards.
- Integrate mechanical design with electrical systems, batteries, wiring, and enclosures to ensure reliable and safe performance.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability (DFM) principles to create cost-effective designs that scale efficiently, accounting for tooling, processes, and assembly.
- Develop test plans, execute testing, and analyze results to confirm products meet standards and requirements.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Base is a startup where priorities shift quickly; your role may expand based on business needs. The company values first-principles thinking, rapid execution, direct feedback, ownership, and in-person collaboration.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field
- 3+ years of mechanical design experience for consumer or industrial hardware where performance is critical to customer satisfaction or safety (e.g., automotive, laptops, power tools)
- Proficiency in 3D and 2D CAD and statistical tolerance analysis
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and manufacturing (3D printing, CNC machining)
- Working knowledge of materials science and how materials behave under thermal and mechanical loads
- Understanding of DFM and ability to collaborate with manufacturing teams
- Experience with product lifecycle management from concept through production (part release, documentation, sustaining, obsolescence)
- Strong communication and documentation skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience designing enclosures or structural assemblies for battery, power-electronics, or thermally/electrically demanding systems
- Experience with statistical tolerance analysis on high-volume assemblies
- Familiarity with safety standards relevant to energy storage or electromechanical products
