BETA Technologies is revolutionizing electric aviation through advanced aircraft design and development. This Mechanical Design Engineer role focuses on developing high-lift-device mechanisms and installations for an advanced narrowbody electric aircraft.
You will be responsible for translating aerodynamic and system requirements into practical flap and slat hardware, kinematics, actuation interfaces, and configuration-controlled product definitions. The role involves extensive CAD work, kinematic modeling, and mechanical analysis across the full operating envelope.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop 3D CAD models, layouts, drawings, and interface definitions for high-lift mechanisms, supports, tracks, hinges, linkages, actuation systems, sensors, and installation hardware
- Build and evaluate kinematic and packaging models across required operating conditions
- Perform preliminary calculations and trade studies for mechanism loads, geometry, bearings, fasteners, tolerances, stiffness, clearances, and mass
- Design for assembly, rigging, inspection, maintenance, lubrication, wear, repair, manufacturing, and test access
- Support tolerance analysis, drawing release, configuration control, supplier coordination, prototype build, fit checks, and functional testing
- Collaborate with High-Lift Aerodynamics, Loads, Structures, Stress, Systems Integration, Flight Controls, Safety, Manufacturing, and Test teams
- Document assumptions, interfaces, design decisions, open risks, and verification needs
The position is based onsite at the South Burlington, VT office or Raleigh, NC office. Remote candidates may be considered for a hybrid arrangement with monthly in-person visits to South Burlington, VT. The role involves extended computer and CAD work, regular work around aircraft, mechanisms, laboratories, manufacturing areas, and test equipment. Occasional travel, hands-on hardware work, and use of standard protective equipment may be required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Three or more years of aerospace mechanical design, mechanism design, actuation, or aircraft installation experience
- Proficiency with CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, or comparable CAD and drawing environment
- Working knowledge of kinematics, bearings, joints, fasteners, tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and mechanical load paths
- Experience supporting hardware through design, build, fit check, and test phases
- Must be a US Person
Desired Qualifications:
- Aircraft flap, slat, control-surface, landing-gear, door, actuation, or other mechanism-design experience
- Experience with hydraulic or electromechanical actuation, rigging, wear, lubrication, maintainability, or jam-risk assessment
- Experience supporting prototype or flight-test aircraft in a fast-paced development environment
