Salary: USD 240,000 - 305,000 / annual
Gusto is seeking a Manager for Developer Productivity & AI Tools to lead the platform that enables Gusto engineers to work with AI at scale. This role owns the end-to-end strategy and execution of agentic coding environments (local and cloud-based), automated AI code review systems, and the CI/security infrastructure supporting both.
You will manage a team of senior engineers building Gusto's agentic coding platform, including tooling infrastructure, agent runtimes, AI-powered code review, and security hardening for safe cloud-based AI workloads. The team partners closely with Infrastructure, Security, and Legal teams, and reports directly to Gusto's CTO.
Key responsibilities include: owning the agentic coding roadmap (interactive and autonomous modes, entry points like Slack/web/CLI, multi-step orchestration); driving agentic code review accuracy and coverage while balancing quality, merge speed, and inference cost; setting security and risk posture for autonomous agents (sandboxing, permission scoping, runtime isolation, secrets handling); establishing and enforcing AI infrastructure spend guardrails; recruiting and mentoring senior engineers through ambiguous, fast-moving technical challenges; and serving as a strategic partner to engineering leadership on AI-native software development direction.
This is not a traditional developer productivity management role. You'll make judgment calls on agent autonomy and security, negotiate infrastructure vendor contracts, and set AI-spend guardrails alongside standard engineering management responsibilities.
