Tide is a fintech platform serving over 2 million SMEs globally with business banking, invoicing, and accounting solutions. The company operates across the UK, India, Germany, and France with 2,800+ employees and has raised over $300 million.
You will join one of 40+ engineering teams working on Tide's event-driven microservice architecture (200+ services). As a Backend Engineer, you'll own the full lifecycle of microservices your team builds—designing, building, running, and scaling them globally.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and maintain backend services using Java 17, Spring Boot, and JOOQ
- Build and consume RESTful APIs, treating them as products (many are public-facing in Open Banking)
- Work with event-driven systems using SNS/SQS and Kafka for asynchronous communication
- Use PostgreSQL via AWS Aurora as the primary datastore
- Deploy to production multiple times daily via GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines
- Leverage modern DevOps practices with Docker, Terraform, EKS/Kubernetes, and ArgoCD
- Monitor and troubleshoot services using DataDog
- Collaborate with Product Owners to translate business and regulatory requirements into well-engineered solutions
Required experience:
- Server-side application development with strong programming fundamentals (Java preferred but not required)
- Hands-on experience with backend frameworks like Spring/Spring Boot for building microservices
- Cloud-native architecture and CI/CD pipeline experience
- Track record delivering secure, well-tested, well-documented software that integrates with third-party providers
- Understanding of fintech integration patterns and regulatory considerations
