Formlabs builds 3D printing technology used by over 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, and NASA. The company powers innovation across dental labs, hospitals, factories, and engineering teams. As Embedded Engineering Manager, you will lead the embedded software team responsible for firmware that runs on 130,000+ printers globally, including the Form 4, Form 4L, Fuse 1+, and Fuse X1. Firmware transforms hardware into a machine customers trust for 12-hour production runs. You'll own delivery across microcontrollers and embedded Linux platforms, with new printer platforms launching over the next few years. Key responsibilities: - Own firmware delivery for current and upcoming printers: hit milestones, set quality standards, and partner with program leads on release decisions. - Remain hands-on: review architecture and code, debug on target hardware alongside engineers, and contribute code when needed. - Define a shared embedded platform (drivers, communication stacks, RTOS, embedded Linux integration, bootloaders, firmware updates, build infrastructure) so new printers reuse proven solutions. - Hire and coach strong embedded engineers; address performance issues directly and early. - Partner with electrical, mechanical, systems integration, and software teams from board bring-up through production; trace field failures to root cause. - Build test automation, CI pipelines, and static analysis to enable safe firmware updates across a large installed base. - Challenge requirements and eliminate work that doesn't matter to customers. You will work in a hands-on environment where technical leadership directly impacts product quality and customer success. REQUIREMENTS: - Shipped production firmware in C/C++ for complex electromechanical products (robots, consumer electronics, medical devices, industrial equipment). - Led a team of embedded or firmware engineers, including hiring and performance management. - Taken multiple products from prototype to volume production and supported them post-launch. - Comfortable across bare-metal microcontrollers, embedded Linux, and multicore processors; proficient in Python for tooling and testing. - Hands-on board bring-up and peripheral experience (ADC, PWM, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet); can read schematics and debug with scope and logic analyzer. - Profile and optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power; diagnose issues across connected controllers using logs and trace data. - Make decisions with incomplete information, move quickly, and explain technical trade-offs to customers. - Communicate clearly with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as product and program leads. BONUS SKILLS: - Linux kernel experience (device drivers). - Firmware for motion control, lasers, optics, or thermal systems. - Over-the-air (OTA) updates and device security for connected products. - Supporting large fleets of connected devices in the field. - MISRA C or safety-critical coding standards. - 3D printing experience. - Electronics or robotics background.
