Focused Energy is a fusion energy startup developing laser-induced inertial fusion technology for clean, scalable power generation. You will lead multiple concurrent R&D programs covering laser and optical efforts, managing the full lifecycle from scoping through delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own end-to-end R&D programs with accountability for scope, schedule, budget, risks, and deliverables across optical coatings, nonlinear crystals, and advanced optical technologies. Drive milestone gates, purchase orders, and go/no-go decisions.
- Manage a multi-vendor portfolio of specialist optics and crystal suppliers developing competing and complementary technologies, maintaining appropriate confidentiality barriers.
- Collaborate with architects and physicists to define test campaigns and qualification specifications, ensuring proper scoping, resourcing, and scheduling before lab handoff.
- Supervise and mentor laser engineers and technicians responsible for experimental execution, data collection, and test reporting. Ensure data quality, protocol compliance, and timely delivery.
- Consolidate findings across programs—experimental results, vendor deliverables, comparative analyses—into clear recommendations for leadership and actionable specifications for vendors.
- Communicate progress, risks, and decisions across stakeholders (leadership, technical teams, external partners) with clarity and appropriate detail.
The role offers hybrid flexibility in Darmstadt, competitive salary with stock options, 30 days vacation, subsidized canteen, fitness benefits, and a collaborative international environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's or PhD in Optics, Laser Physics, Photonics, Materials Science, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in optics, photonics, or laser technology
- Demonstrated ability to manage multi-partner R&D projects with external suppliers, research services, and internal teams
- Experience steering technical work packages and coordinating lab activities
- Strong orientation toward practical outcomes and industrialization; ability to translate technical results into vendor specifications and program decisions
- Fluency in English; self-directed, structured, comfortable in fast-moving startup environment
- Preferred: Experience with laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) testing or optical lifetime and reliability characterization
- Preferred: Knowledge of advanced or emerging optical coating technologies
- Preferred: Experience with external optics suppliers and/or photonics research institutes
- Preferred: German and/or French language proficiency
