WellTheory is a Series A digital health company focused on helping people with autoimmune conditions manage their health through personalized care, nutrition guidance, and ongoing coaching. The company operates with 60+ team members and serves members while partnering with employers and payors.
As Head of Engineering, you will be WellTheory's first engineering leader, responsible for building and scaling the engineering function from the ground up. This is a player-coach role where you'll spend 20-30% of your time coding and the remainder leading the team, setting technical direction, and partnering across product, design, and leadership. You'll report directly to the Co-Founder & Chief Product Officer.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and growing the engineering team through hiring, 1:1s, performance management, and career development
- Defining engineering processes including planning, code review, testing, release practices, and incident response that balance velocity with compliance rigor
- Setting technical direction and making foundational architecture decisions with the founding engineer to support scaling
- Owning platform and DevOps infrastructure, including non-production environments that protect PHI
- Embedding compliance (HIPAA, SOC 2 Type 2, HITRUST) into engineering practices from the start
- Integrating AI tooling (coding agents, evals, internal tools) to multiply engineer productivity
- Staying hands-on by reviewing code, pairing on complex problems, and shipping when high-leverage
- Shaping the product roadmap in partnership with the Staff PM and Product Design Lead
- Representing engineering at the leadership table
The platform includes a member-facing app, internal tools for the Care Team, and insurance/data infrastructure connecting to employers, health plans, and channel partners—all built with healthcare compliance and data security as core requirements.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams through growth phases; experience managing senior individual contributors and understanding what breaks at each scaling stage
- Background building in regulated environments (healthcare, fintech, or similar) where data handling, security, and compliance shape architecture and process
- Ability to identify and hire strong talent; proven track record of building high-performing teams
- Recent hands-on experience shipping production TypeScript or JavaScript; commitment to staying technical
- Ownership mindset around systems reliability, observability, environments, and incident response
- Experience helping teams leverage AI effectively without creating technical debt
- Ability to partner collaboratively with strong product, design, and engineering leaders without ego
- Experience in cross-functional models where engineering, product, and design jointly shape roadmaps
- Strong written communication skills; comfort with fully remote, documentation-first workflows
- Current work authorization in the United States (visa sponsorship not available)
- Access to protected health information required for role
BONUS:
- Digital health or B2B2C healthcare experience; familiarity with eligibility, claims, or care delivery systems
- Leadership experience on SOC 2 or HITRUST compliance initiatives from the engineering side
- Track record of exceptional achievement or overcoming significant challenges
