Antares is building mass-producible, inherently safe, deployable microreactors for terrestrial, underwater, and space applications. The company has raised over $600M in venture capital and holds hundreds of millions in contracts with military services, NASA, and the Department of Energy.
As Harnessing Engineer, you will own the complete wire harness layer across all systems—from component selection through supplier delivery and in-house build. You'll design harnesses for both testbed and safety-class applications, managing the interface harnesses between systems and internal harnesses within electrical systems and distribution cabinets.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own harness CAD design: route, bundle, and constrain harnesses in 3D models, managing bend radii, service loops, strain relief, thermal clearances, and connector accessibility for assembly and field service.
- Develop harness schematics: create wiring diagrams, wire lists, from-to charts, connector pinout tables, splice topology, and shield/grounding schemes.
- Component selection: choose wire type and gauge for current, derating, voltage drop, insulation, temperature, radiation, and flex requirements; select connectors, contacts, backshells, and sealing; specify crimp tooling and calibration.
- Design to safety-class requirements: apply physical separation and independence between redundant divisions, respect qualification envelopes, and maintain design records and traceability for I&C classification and licensing.
- Own the harness design review and release process: define review gates, complete packages, and ECO/PLM change management under QA programs.
- Partner with software applications engineers to improve harness design tools: connector and part library management, schematic-to-3D data flow, design rule checks, and automation of deliverables. Manage license administration and vendor escalations.
- Support supplier selection and qualification: evaluate harness houses and electrical panel builders, conduct capability assessments and audits, review RFQs and quotes, provide DFM feedback.
- Own build packages and supplier communication: hand off packages, resolve drawing questions, disposition deviations and nonconformances, support first article and source inspection, drive quality escalations.
- Manage harness BOM and material readiness: keep BOM accurate and released; coordinate with supply chain and quality for on-time delivery, receiving inspection, certificates of conformance, lot traceability, and commercial grade dedication.
- Manage in-house harness builds: direct harnessing technicians, prioritize queue, prepare formboards and work instructions, run operator training and crimp certification, set workmanship standards, maintain inspection and test records, troubleshoot assembly issues.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 2+ years designing production wire harnesses and cable assemblies, from schematic through released, buildable package
- Experience with dedicated electrical/harness CAD tools (Zuken E3.series, Siemens Capital, Mentor VeSys, SolidWorks Electrical, CATIA Electrical, or Rapid Harness)
- Demonstrated experience with harness component selection: wire construction and derating, connector families, contacts, backshells, sealing, and crimp tooling
- Knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 and harness workmanship, inspection, and electrical test practice (continuity, insulation resistance, hipot)
- Experience designing and releasing hardware under formal quality programs (NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, AS9100, or comparable), including revision control, traceability, and nonconformance handling
- Experience directing technicians or build teams with real shop floor time
- Direct experience working with external harness or electrical panel suppliers
PREFERRED:
- Experience with safety-class or safety-related hardware and commercial grade dedication / 10 CFR 21
- Familiarity with IEEE 323, IEEE 383, IEEE 384, SAE AS50881, and NASA-STD-8739.4
- High-voltage and/or high-current power distribution harnessing and cabinet/panel wiring experience
- Tool owner/admin experience: part and connector library management, design rule configuration, template standards, license management
- Track record building or overhauling design release processes
- ERP/MRP systems knowledge for BOM, shortage, and lead-time management
- EMI/EMC-aware design practice: shield termination, twisted pair selection, circuit segregation, filtering
- Scripting ability (Python or similar) to automate wire lists, BOM exports, or drawing checks
- Experience standing up harness design standards and in-house build capability from scratch in fast-moving environments
Note: ITAR compliance required—applicant must be U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from U.S. Department of State.
