AssemblyAI is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer for the Triage team to own customer accounts (up to $50K ARR), solve technical problems directly, and build/manage AI agents that handle first-line customer contact. The company processes 600M+ monthly inference calls, 1M+ hours of audio daily, and powers 2B+ end-user experiences with fewer than 100 employees generating ~$600K ARR per employee.
In this role, you will:
- Own a book of customer accounts up to $50K annually, diagnosing integration issues and unblocking customers quickly
- Build and manage internal AI agents for customer support and operations, including the customer-facing chat agent
- Handle escalations from the chat agent, solve customer problems, and improve the agent to handle similar cases independently
- File bugs and feature requests with evidence for the Engineering and Research teams, turning customer feedback into product improvements
- Improve documentation and SDKs based on customer pain points
- Work primarily in Slack with customers and internal teams
This is a hybrid role requiring you to live within commuting distance of the NYC office. The position offers a clear growth path: engineers who perform well move into larger customer portfolios on the Portfolio and Strategic teams.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years in a technical, customer-facing role (solutions engineering, technical support, developer relations, or software development); 1 year considered for strong solutions background
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred)
- Daily use of coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) with real shipped projects; ability to manage context and verify agent output before customer delivery
- Experience with REST APIs and ability to read/debug customer code
- Strong written communication skills (most work happens in Slack)
- Ability to map customer use cases to API capabilities
NICE TO HAVE:
- Built agents or automations that others rely on
- SQL experience
- Background with speech, audio, or voice AI products
