Anysphere is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to embed directly with customer teams in Japan. You will own end-to-end outcomes: discover customer pain points, design and ship production-grade AI agents and coding workflows, and ensure systems run reliably after you leave.
In this role, you'll lead discovery conversations to understand customer codebases and workflows, identify high-impact use cases, and define success metrics. You'll design and deploy production agents using Grok and Anysphere's models on live business processes within customer engineering organizations. Your work spans the full stack: building AI applications, integrating with customer auth and data systems, setting up monitoring and evals, and iterating based on real usage.
You'll own production quality end-to-end—tracing, debugging model or delivery failures, managing latency and cost tradeoffs, and building the systems around models (tools, MCP servers, retrieval, rules, skills, CI gates, evals). You'll measure outcomes that matter: revenue impact, cost savings, hours saved, error rates, cycle time, or escaped defects. You'll work directly with Staff+ engineers, platform leaders, and domain experts, communicating clearly about tradeoffs and results.
Critically, you'll leave each customer team able to operate and maintain what you've built, and you'll bring patterns and learnings back to improve Anysphere's products. This is not a demo role—you own the work from first discovery call through launch, iteration, and post-launch support, and you're responsible for systems that work in the real world.
Anysphere is a small, flat, talent-dense organization founded in 2022, headquartered in San Francisco. The company builds Cursor, an AI-native code editor for professional programmers, combining inventive research, design, and engineering. The team values truth-seeking, passion, creativity, spirited debate, and shipping code.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, or data science
- Production code writing and review experience (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript; other languages welcome)
- Proven track record owning customer or operator outcomes (not just prototypes or slides); ability to turn fuzzy problems into scoped, shipped systems
- Built and owned AI-native workflows or agents in production; debugged real production failures (model, tool, data, pipeline, or delivery path)
- Production reliability experience: metrics, alerts, safe rollouts, incident response
- Full-stack building capability: frontend, backend, infra, and prompt iteration
- Comfort thriving in ambiguity without a complete spec
- Ability to communicate effectively with working engineers and executives (VP-level)
- Fluency in both Japanese and English (required)
NICE TO HAVE:
- 2+ years in a customer-facing role, leading discovery and owning outcomes for external stakeholders
- Hands-on depth in agents and tool-calling, eval harnesses, retrieval and context systems, CI/CD or developer platforms, or AI-native coding workflows in real repos
- Experience as a forward-deployed, solutions, or platform engineer embedded with customers, or as a founding engineer who owned an AI product end to end
