Forward Deployed Engineers at Luma embed directly with customers to understand their workflows, constraints, and goals, then design and build production systems that solve real problems using Luma's APIs, models, and internal tools. You own the full lifecycle: from initial customer conversations through problem definition, prototyping, shipping, iteration, and ongoing maintenance in real environments with real data.
This role is engineering at the edge, where ambiguity is the norm and you define what to build. It's designed for people with a track record of owning hard problems end-to-end—technical founders, engineers who've rebuilt customer workflows, or consultants who've shipped systems. You'll need strong judgment about what matters and how to make it reliable, using AI to accelerate implementation while maintaining engineering rigor.
Key responsibilities include:
- Work directly with customers to understand their workflows and define problems collaboratively
- Build and deploy production systems on Luma's platform
- Prototype, ship, iterate, and maintain systems in real environments
- Own projects end-to-end from first conversation to deployed system
- Identify platform gaps and feed patterns back to R&D for productization
- Travel to customer sites as needed
A typical first 90 days: Days 1–30 embed with a customer and diagnose the real problem; Days 30–60 build and deploy a production system they use; Days 60–90 identify patterns worth productizing and collaborate with R&D.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of professional software engineering with shipped end-to-end software
- Strong proficiency in at least one general-purpose language (Python, TypeScript, Go, or similar)
- Ability to work across the stack and learn unfamiliar systems quickly
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- Willingness to travel to client sites as needed
Nice to have:
- Track record of shipping real systems with real users, not just assigned tasks
- High agency and strong prioritization; ability to find the core problem and move
- Comfort defining your own path when one doesn't exist
- Evidence of working directly with customers and translating feedback into product
- Clear communication, including explaining technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders
