Helsing is a defence AI company focused on protecting democracies through technological leadership and ethical AI development. You will join a small engineering team building and validating flight dynamics models for aerial platforms.
In this role, you will develop flight dynamics models end-to-end, from first-principles architecture and specification through numerical simulation to validation against real flight-test data. Your models will directly feed into control law design, simulation environments, and autonomy development, making accuracy critical to how quickly and safely new capabilities reach the air.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Developing flight dynamics models for aerial platforms from conception through validation against flight-test data
- Specifying and executing numerical and experimental campaigns, setting acceptance criteria for model fitness
- Collaborating with control, aerodynamics, and test engineers to ensure models integrate seamlessly into control design and autonomy systems
- Attending and analyzing flight tests, converting telemetry and anomalies into measurable improvements in model fidelity
- Documenting and presenting model assumptions, limitations, and validation results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
You will work in a mission-driven environment with an open, transparent culture that welcomes healthy debate on the ethical implications of defence technology.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated experience building and validating flight dynamics models from first principles, tested against real flight or experimental data
- Strong grounding in aerodynamics, stability and control, and systems modelling (gained through engineering degree or equivalent practice)
- Fluent in MATLAB and Simulink
- Clean, well-structured code writing in MATLAB and at least one of: Python, Rust, Java, or modern C++
- Clear communication of findings in writing and presentations to technical and non-technical audiences
NICE TO HAVE:
- Applied system identification, control systems design, or applied aerodynamics in a flight programme
- Experience deploying dynamics models onto real-time test rigs (e.g., hardware-in-the-loop setups)
