We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead one or more engineering teams. You will report to the Head of Engineering and work daily with the Product Manager, senior engineers on your team, and Staff Engineers who provide cross-functional technical support.
You will be measured by how well your team decides, delivers, learns, and grows—not by how many decisions pass through you. The team autonomously resolves routine work, escalates technical challenges to Staff Engineers, and organizational problems to you. Your role is to ensure this system functions without creating bottlenecks.
Key responsibilities include:
**People Management:** You are responsible for the growth, performance, and wellbeing of your teams. You drive career development by progressively exposing people to next-level responsibilities and facilitating transitions between technical and management tracks. You monitor workload, detect burnout or stagnation early, participate in hiring, and ensure smooth onboarding.
**Working Methods:** You ensure the team has clear mission, ownership, and decision-making levels. You guarantee ceremonies run smoothly without requiring you to direct them, unblock when needed, and address root causes. You protect team focus against parallel work and organizational noise.
**Delivery:** You create conditions for predictable, sustainable value delivery through clear priorities, realistic commitments based on capacity/complexity/risk, and visible, timely risk escalation. You track team predictability and drive corrective actions when deviations occur.
**Technical Health:** You ensure clear technical leadership and space for senior and staff engineers to lead and mentor others. You guarantee each sprint reserves capacity for technical debt, security, and maintenance, and manage quality, reliability, and incidents with a learning focus.
**AI in Development:** You drive responsible and useful adoption of AI tools in the development cycle—creating space for experimentation, measuring real impact, and ensuring security and confidentiality.
**Product & Business:** You understand the domain, customers, and business well enough to make sound decisions. The Product Manager owns functional prioritization; you contribute early on engineering constraints, risks, and opportunities, and unblock coordination when stuck. You ensure the team understands why their work matters.
**Organization:** You collaborate with other Engineering Managers, Staff Engineers, Heads of Engineering, Product, Platform, and Professional Services. You identify systemic problems that can't be solved within your team and escalate appropriately, thinking about the broader organization.
The role is based in Madrid with a 50% hybrid work model.
**Requirements:**
**Professional Experience:**
- Minimum 3 years as an Engineering Manager with direct people management responsibility
**Education:**
- University degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Software Engineering, or related disciplines
**Languages:**
- Native Spanish and English B1 or higher
**Hard Skills (Mandatory):**
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of agile methodology (Scrum)
- Demonstrated track record of building autonomous teams: you have created clarity, ownership, and working methods, not just coordinated work
- Solid foundation as a software engineer: sufficient context to understand risks, trade-offs, and technical debt without needing to decide architecture
- Clear communication upward, downward, and laterally, including delivering difficult feedback and representing risks to stakeholders
**Hard Skills (Desirable):**
- Experience working with Product on team planning and commitments, respecting their prioritization role, and ability to challenge scope and timelines with sound arguments
- Experience in fraud prevention, AML, payments, fintech, or regulated environments
- Experience with high-volume, low-latency production systems, including incidents, on-call, and reliability practices
- Experience with AWS, Docker, and Python
- Additional training in leadership or people management
- Experience with agile frameworks and accompanying organizational transformations or domain-organized teams
