Shield AI is a venture-backed defense-tech company developing autonomous systems for unmanned platforms and mission-critical applications. The company's product suite includes Hivemind autonomy software, V-BAT and X-BAT aircraft, and Aechelon simulation technologies, deployed globally across military and civilian operations.
As Engineer II, Flight Test, you will support the design, planning, and execution of comprehensive test programs for Hivemind autonomy capabilities integrated onto unmanned aircraft and mission systems. Working alongside senior test engineers, you will define test objectives, acceptance criteria, and verification methods; develop and maintain test procedures, checklists, and configurations; and operate software-in-the-loop (SIL), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), simulation, laboratory, and automated test environments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with test planning, objective definition, and acceptance-criteria development
- Developing and executing system-level test procedures and test cases
- Setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting SIL, HIL, simulation, and laboratory test environments
- Installing and verifying test hardware, software, networks, ground-control equipment, sensors, and computing systems
- Collecting, organizing, and analyzing test data, telemetry, logs, video, and configuration information
- Identifying deviations from expected performance, documenting defects, and supporting root-cause investigations
- Contributing to test reports, performance metrics, dashboards, and readiness materials for internal and external stakeholders
- Maintaining test infrastructure, automation tools, and repeatable test configurations
- Participating in test-readiness reviews, technical planning meetings, and post-test debriefs
- Following established safety, security, and configuration-management procedures
- Traveling periodically to test sites, customer locations, and integration events
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's degree in a STEM discipline (Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or related field); equivalent practical experience may be considered
- Foundational experience with engineering test, integration, troubleshooting, or verification through coursework, internships, research, military service, laboratory work, personal projects, or professional experience
- Familiarity with basic systems-engineering and test concepts: requirements, verification, validation, test procedures, configuration management, defect tracking, and technical documentation
- Interest in autonomous systems, robotics, unmanned aircraft systems, flight-test operations, simulation, embedded systems, or software-and-hardware integration
- Familiarity with Linux, Windows, command-line tools, networking basics, and/or scripting/programming languages (Python, Bash, C++, or similar)
- Ability to work methodically, follow detailed procedures, maintain accurate records, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; ability to investigate unexpected system behavior using logs, telemetry, and test results
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for technical findings across cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated reliability, accountability, teamwork, attention to detail, and commitment to high-performing engineering culture
- Ability to travel periodically
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Internship, academic research, military, laboratory, or professional experience with UAS, autonomous vehicles, robotics, aviation, embedded systems, or complex integrated systems
- Exposure to SIL, HIL, simulation, modeling-and-simulation, or automated test environments
- Familiarity with test automation, scripting, data collection, telemetry analysis, log analysis, or defect-tracking tools
- Exposure to software-development and configuration-management practices (Git, issue tracking, build systems, CI, test automation)
- Familiarity with basic networking concepts (Ethernet, IP networking, UDP/TCP, network troubleshooting)
- Exposure to flight-test, aviation, safety, or operational-risk-management processes
- Working knowledge of DoD development, test, evaluation, or acquisition processes (DT&E, OT&E)
- Experience in laboratory, integration facility, field-test environment, maker space, or similar hands-on technical setting
