Salary: USD 170,000 - 260,000 / annual
Formlabs builds 3D printing technology used by over 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, and NASA. The company creates tools that enable innovation across industries, from consumer products to life-saving medical devices.
As Embedded Software Engineering Manager, you will lead the embedded software team responsible for firmware that runs on 130,000+ printers globally, including the Form 4, Form 4L, Fuse 1+, and Fuse X1. Your firmware turns hardware into machines that customers trust for 12-hour production runs in dental labs, hospitals, factories, and engineering teams. With new printers launching over the next few years, the platform you build now will determine how quickly each new machine reaches production and how reliably it performs in the field.
Key responsibilities:
- Own delivery of embedded firmware for current and upcoming printers: hit program milestones, set quality standards, and collaborate with program leads on release decisions.
- Remain hands-on: review architecture and code, debug on target hardware alongside your engineers, and contribute code when needed.
- Define direction for a shared embedded platform (drivers, communication stacks, RTOS, embedded Linux integration, bootloaders, firmware updates, build infrastructure) so new printers reuse proven solutions.
- Hire strong embedded engineers, coach them to excellence, and address performance issues directly and early.
- Partner with electrical engineering, systems integration, mechanical, and software teams from board bring-up through production; trace field failures to root cause.
- Build test automation, CI pipelines, and static analysis tools that enable safe firmware updates to a large installed base.
- Question requirements and eliminate work that doesn't matter to customers, focusing the team on high-impact work.
Requirements:
- Experienced embedded software engineer who has shipped production firmware in C and C++ for complex electromechanical products (robots, consumer electronics, medical devices, industrial equipment).
- Proven track record leading a team of embedded or firmware engineers, including hiring and performance management.
- Multiple products taken from prototype through volume production with post-launch support.
- Comfortable working from bare-metal microcontrollers to embedded Linux and multicore processors; proficient with Python for tooling and testing.
- Board bring-up and peripheral experience (ADC, PWM, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet); able to read schematics and debug with oscilloscope and logic analyzer.
- Ability to profile and optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power; diagnose issues across connected controllers using logs and trace data.
- Comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, moving quickly, and explaining technical decisions in customer terms.
- Clear communication with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as product and program leads.
Bonus skills: Linux kernel and device driver experience, firmware for motion control/lasers/optics/thermal systems, OTA updates and device security, fleet management for connected devices, MISRA C or safety-critical coding standards, 3D printing experience, electronics or robotics background.
