GoCardless, a Mollie company, is a global leader in bank payments processing over US$130bn annually across 30+ countries. The company operates through Direct Debit, real-time payments, and open banking solutions, serving over 100,000 businesses worldwide.
Riga is a key engineering hub for GoCardless with over 200 people. The Connectivity group—responsible for building and operating every bank debit and open banking connection—is entirely based there. This group manages the full problem space end-to-end: build, operate, on-call, and incident management, handling billions of pounds in submissions monthly with zero tolerance for failure.
As Director of Engineering, you will have three primary responsibilities:
1. Ensure the Connectivity group delivers as a core engineering function, owning all core banking connections and file submissions that process billions monthly and must run flawlessly every day.
2. Serve as the engineering site leader for Riga, working with local leadership to make the office a destination for talent and a high-performing hub.
3. Advocate for and hire in Riga by working with grassroots training schools and communities to establish GoCardless as a destination for local engineering talent.
Key aspects of the role include: owning the roadmap and strategically planning reliability and future delivery with senior leaders while articulating ROI for technical investment; shaping how Connectivity operates at scale and how the company attracts, grows, and retains local talent; demonstrating a growth mindset open to change while maintaining focus and speed; applying first-principles thinking to decompose ambiguous problems; maintaining customer obsession in delivery; functioning as a player-manager who can deep-dive into technical problems and architecture while earning respect from senior engineers; and building a high-performance engineering culture.
The role requires being based in the Riga office; this is not remote.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience building and managing agile teams or departments of 20+ people, including managing both managers and individual contributors up to Principal level
- Experience working at scale where security and operational excellence are critical
- Proven delivery track record: ensuring project work is delivered, estimates are accurate, time is tracked, and velocity is measured and used to improve the team
- Clear communication skills: concise, regular communication to non-technical leadership on progress against strategy and team objectives
- Strategic mindset comfortable tackling long-term roadmaps and longer-term problems and vision
- Must be comfortable being based in the Riga office
