Second Front Systems is a public-benefit software company serving the U.S. national security sector. They are seeking a Director of Data and Analytics to build and lead their centralized data and analytics function from the ground up, reporting to the VP of Finance.
In this role, you will own the full data lifecycle across the company. Your responsibilities include:
• Architecting the company's data warehouse, cloud platform, data pipelines, data models, and BI infrastructure to replace ad-hoc reporting with reliable, reusable assets.
• Establishing governance, definitions, and lineage for company KPIs so metrics are centralized, governed, and audit-ready.
• Building reporting consumed by executives, boards, and investors with the accuracy discipline required for those audiences.
• Designing data governance frameworks that enforce metric definitions across competing business units (finance, sales, engineering) without freezing the organization.
• Translating between technical implementation and business decisions in both directions.
• Owning outcomes in a build role with comfort for ambiguity.
The company operates in a mixed revenue model environment (subscription, government contracting, and professional services) and serves regulated-industry customers, so experience with federal reporting expectations is valuable.
REQUIREMENTS:
• 8+ years in data, analytics, or business intelligence, including 3+ years leading a function, team, or company-wide data initiative.
• Demonstrated experience building an analytics capability from scratch (zero-to-one), not only operating mature stacks.
• Advanced SQL and deep hands-on experience with modern data stacks: cloud warehouses (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift), transformation frameworks (dbt or equivalent), ingestion tooling, semantic layers, and BI platforms (Looker, Power BI, Tableau, Sigma, or similar). You should be capable of architecting across the stack.
• Working knowledge of SaaS business and financial metrics (ARR, retention, CAC, payback, gross margin, cohort behavior) and judgment to recognize when metrics are calculated in ways that won't survive scrutiny.
• Track record of designing data governance frameworks that enforce metric definitions across competing business units.
• Ability to translate between technical implementation and business decisions without losing either audience.
• Comfort with ambiguity and owning outcomes rather than tickets.
PREFERRED:
• Experience in a scaling B2B software or technology company, ideally in the ~$10M–$200M ARR/revenue range during rapid growth.
• Experience reporting on mixed revenue models (subscription, government contracting, professional services) and familiarity with federal or regulated-industry reporting expectations.
• Python or R for analysis beyond SQL.
