Mistral is a full-stack AI company providing frontier models, developer tools, applications, and compute infrastructure. They partner with enterprises across finance, manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and the public sector to deploy customized AI systems.
You will join a small, senior on-site team responsible for maintaining and operating one of France's largest AI clusters. This is a hands-on hardware engineering role at the intersection of high-performance computing and physical infrastructure. You'll work directly with GPU-dense racks (H100/H200-class and next-generation platforms), high-speed interconnects, and liquid-cooled systems, with new sites under development in France and beyond.
Key responsibilities include:
- Diagnose and repair server and cluster hardware: CPUs, memory, drives, NICs, GPUs, PSUs, and interconnect problems (switches, cables, transceivers; Ethernet/InfiniBand)
- Intervene safely with proper power-off/lockout procedures, ESD discipline, and pre/post-work checklists
- Document all work comprehensively—photos, serials, test results—and maintain clear ticket notes for handoff to other engineers
- Manage parts inventory: receive, label, track, and coordinate RMAs with vendors
- Contribute to operational improvement by feeding recurring anomalies into monitoring, alerts, and SOPs; write small automation scripts (Python/Bash) where applicable
- Provide clear status updates and honest handovers to support the team and cluster reliability
- Support a 24/7 operation with rotating on-call and emergency response expectations
You will carry end-to-end responsibility for hardware—this is not a ticket-passing role. The team is distributed across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, but this position is on-site at the Bessé-sur-Braye data center.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Hands-on comfort in data centers or server hardware; ability to work cleanly in racks (rails, cabling, labeling, mounting)
- Disciplined, meticulous approach to checklists and procedures
- Practical electrical basics: power-off procedures, PPE, short-circuit risk awareness
- Basic Linux knowledge (boot checks, logs); scripting is a plus but not required
- Physically able to work in racks (lift, mount, maneuver) in a data center environment
- Comfortable in a 24/7 operation with rotating on-call and emergency response expectations
- Valid driver's license (category B) for travel between sites
NICE TO HAVE:
- HPC/AI/cloud production experience at scale; large-fleet server install and maintenance
- Networking fundamentals (Ethernet/InfiniBand) beyond basics
- Vendor/RMA tooling, ticketing systems (Jira/ServiceNow), inventory systems
- Python/Bash automation for checks, capture, inventory, or reporting
Mistral notes that many of their best hardware engineers came from research labs, telecoms, IT services, or the military. They assess demonstrated scope and motivation rather than keyword matching.
