Focused Energy is a laser-driven fusion company developing commercially viable fusion energy solutions. As a Cryogenics Engineer, you will own the end-to-end simulation and analysis function for advanced cryogenic thermal and fluid systems designed for commercial-scale fusion energy applications.
You will lead analytical approaches for new and undefined challenges, applying first-principles research to create pioneering solutions. Your responsibilities include developing, simulating, and validating experimental designs; driving model validation through close collaboration with experimental engineers; and ensuring the cryogenics team's hardware decisions are supported by robust quantitative analysis. You will develop integrated thermal and fluid analysis packages for commercial-scale system development, conducting optimization and sensitivity studies. You'll continuously refine analysis models as new experimental, materials, and system data become available, and partner closely with hardware engineers, experimentalists, and scientists to define system requirements and deliver actionable analyses for design. You will provide the analytical foundation for the cryogenics team's technical roadmap, guiding what gets built, tested, and scaled.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3–5 years' experience (or equivalent PhD research) in integrated thermal and fluid analysis involving cryogenic systems; hydrogen experience preferred
- MSc or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
- Strong foundation in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
- Proficient in thermal analysis software (e.g., Thermal Desktop, COMSOL) and able to anchor analyses to real hardware
- Familiarity with hydrogen systems, vacuum systems, cryogenic technologies, and phase change in solids, liquids, and gases
- Skilled with instrumentation, sensors, and control logic for temperature, pressure, and flow in cryogenic environments
- Hands-on experience with test rig construction, system debugging, and low-temperature measurements to support model validation is a plus
- Comfortable collaborating across disciplines and able to coordinate effectively with multiple engineering and science teams
