Red 6 is an AR technology startup pioneering synthetic air combat training for military pilots. The company's ATARS product enables pilots to experience fully immersive 3D synthetic worlds overlaid on real aircraft in real flight, replacing costly legacy training methods with scalable, realistic, repeatable training in dynamic outdoor environments.
As Chief Engineer, you will own the technical direction and system architecture of this groundbreaking airborne AR platform. This is a founding-level technical leadership role where you set strategy rather than inherit roadmaps.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive end-to-end system architecture for an airborne AR system, leading hardware integration and close collaboration with software teams
- Make critical design decisions on complex technical trade-offs and system integration challenges
- Translate government customer requirements into clear system and subsystem specifications, and conduct system analysis to validate that specifications meet mission requirements
- Engage directly with government customers to understand evolving needs and position Red 6 ahead of the curve
- Build and guide the technical roadmap that keeps Red 6 at the industry forefront
- Lead cross-functional teams spanning hardware, software, optics, systems, and flight test to maintain alignment and momentum
- Serve as the technical voice of the company, shaping product direction and engineering decisions
Your work directly impacts warfighter readiness and preparation for real-world missions. The system you architect will fly in real aircraft, built with startup speed and defense-grade rigor.
Requirements:
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
- 15+ years of relevant experience in system engineering, hardware design, and technical leadership roles for simulation, AR, VR, or related products in defense, aerospace, or related industries
- Proven expertise in system architecture design with strong emphasis on combined hardware/software systems and systems integration
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive decisions on complex technical issues and system trades
- Ability to perform system analysis to ensure subsystem specifications, when integrated, meet product requirements
- Excellent communication skills to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
Ideal Qualifications:
- Experience with sensors (camera, time-of-flight) and image processing
- Experience with VR/AR hardware (Rift, VIVE, Gear VR, etc.)
- Experience working with government customers and understanding defense industry standards and protocols
- Experience designing complex electromechanical systems and getting them certified for DoD use
- Solid understanding of requirements management tools such as Jama or DOORs
